From a benchmark discovered in high school to CrystalMark, CrystalDiskMark, CrystalDiskInfo, and CrystalMark CPUix. This is the story of independent software development carried forward into the future.
It began with a fascination for measuring performance.
While attending high school, Noriyuki MIYAZAKI discovered benchmark software that expressed computer performance as measurable results. Computers that looked similar could behave very differently depending on their processors, memory, storage, and other components.
Performance cannot be understood from appearance alone. Product names and specifications do not always reveal the experience of using a machine. Some things only become visible when hardware is tested under consistent conditions.
Independent software development began in 1998.
In 1998, MIYAZAKI began developing and publishing software for Windows. The process was simple and enduring: build what seemed necessary, release it, listen to users, and continue improving it.
Independent development makes it possible to turn ideas into working software quickly. It also means taking responsibility for legacy compatibility, unfamiliar hardware, user questions, and long-term maintenance.
CrystalMark measured the computer as a whole.
In 2002, the CrystalMark system benchmark and the CrystalCPUID CPU information utility were released.
CrystalMark was designed to evaluate multiple parts of a computer, including the processor, memory, storage, and graphics.
The experience gained through CPU detection, performance measurement, compatibility engineering, and interface design became the foundation for CrystalDiskMark, CrystalDiskInfo, CrystalMark Retro, and CrystalMark CPUix.
CrystalDiskMark measured performance. CrystalDiskInfo made health visible.
CrystalDiskMark was released on March 31, 2007, to make storage performance measurement accessible to everyone. Its simple operation and clear results made it useful for individual users, product reviews, business validation, and hardware development.
CrystalDiskInfo was released on May 22, 2008, to communicate storage health. It organized S.M.A.R.T. attributes, temperatures, operating hours, and other technical information into a form that could support practical decisions.
In its first year, CrystalDiskInfo received the Grand Prize in the software category of the 2008 Mado no Mori Awards, based on reader voting.
Independent software grew into products used around the world.
Through multilingual support and continuous compatibility work, CrystalDiskInfo and CrystalDiskMark reached users across the world.
They are used in product reviews, hardware development, quality evaluation, technical support, and failure investigation as well as personal computer maintenance.
Technical cooperation has included information exchange with storage vendors and storage controller vendors, support for new products, compatibility validation, and issue investigation. Collaborations with MSI and A1Data expanded the work beyond standalone software.
Since January 2014, Noriyuki MIYAZAKI has continuously received Microsoft MVP recognition in C++.
To bring these technologies and achievements to more people, for generations to come.
Products that began as independent software grew over many years into tools used by millions of people. Continued distribution, business licensing, support services, and corporate collaboration required a more durable foundation.
CrystalMark Inc. was established on February 18, 2025, to bring the technologies and achievements built through these activities to more people over the long term.
The software continues to be independently developed and maintained by Noriyuki MIYAZAKI. With authorization from the developer, CrystalMark Inc. handles software distribution, business licensing, support, technical cooperation, and collaborations.
Preserving past technology while creating a standard for the future.
CrystalMark Retro measures and records performance across a broad range of systems, including legacy versions of Windows, helping preserve the history of computer technology.
CrystalMark CPUix is designed to evaluate processors from Windows 95 and Windows NT 3.51 through modern x64 and ARM64 systems, and eventually future generations of processors, using a consistent philosophy.
The goal is not merely to produce another benchmark. It is to create a standard whose measurements can be explained and whose results remain comparable over the long term.
